Did you survive the email avalanche?
I hope you’ve been able to dig your inbox out from the avalanche of Black Friday and Cyber Monday emails.
Is it just me, or did the email promotions seem extra awful this year?
In my inbox, I saw a lot of gimmicks. A lot of fake scarcity.
“This is your last chance.”
“No, I’ve reopened the cart so you have one more chance.”
“Ok, now this time it’s really your last chance.”
The other thing that stood out in my inbox was the number of people claiming “I’ve never done this before, it’s my first Black Friday special”.
Marketers often talk about “entering the conversation already taking place in your prospect’s mind”. I doubt too many people wake up in the morning thinking “I wonder if Bill ever ran a Black Friday special?”
The takeaway for me is a reminder to return to the basics - the fundamentals of marketing. Focusing on creating offers that allow us to do our best work, solving problems, and capturing opportunities for the people who appreciate and value what we do.
